PostSubject: A young woman rises as a symbol of hope for a peaceful resolution to Mexico's violent conflict   Wed Oct 20, 2010 4:29 pm

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/10/20/mexico.female.police.chief/index.html?hpt=C2

This article made me a little emotional.Forget girlpower, this young woman(your age) is just brave.Violence related to the ongoign drug war is so rampant in Mexico that in one town os 25000 people, the entire 30 member police force left their posts fearful that they would become targets of violent drug gangs. The Mayor of the town offered the job of police chief too 120 different local citezens with political, law enforcement or military experience.Noone accepted. Then he offered the post to a 20 year olf criminology student and with no field experience she took the job.

She said she is tired of people in her hometown being frightened of gangs and violence and she plans to use the non-violent Dr.Martin Luther King tactic to combat the narco terrorists and build the confidence of good law abiding citezens.

She managed to recruit 14 other women from the community to join the renewed police force and refused to wear uniforms or carry guns. They figure that its no use trying to pose a threat to the ruthless cartels,so instead they are forming neighborhood watch groups and setting up town hall meetings and other events to get all of the townspeople involved being active in the non-violent campaign.

So far her tactic is working, there have been no murders or violent assaults since she took the post and she nor or family have been threatened or hurt, some speculate that is because even the criminal regime in Mexico admires her courage and determination.

This girl truly has a calling on her life, and I prayed that god would protect her.I think she will become an important symbol of non-violent activism in a country grossly infected with bloodshed and fear.If she continues her crusade she will join the ranks of Dr.King and Mohanderas Ghandi.God bless her soul and heart.

The big question is however..how long are the drug gangs and other criminals going to respect her courage before they get back to their violent ways?

May god protect her.

WOW some set of Cojones, eh? Shocked
But, if not now, then when! I suppose
and at what price?

Huh... As much as I fear the inevitable,
I couldn't be any more prouder and I wish
her nothing but the very best!

I really HOPE I'm wrong. But sadly I'll
second Colt, as I think 1 of 2 things will
end up happpening here.

1) They'll kidnap a family member
(Likely her daughter), and use her
to their advantage in continuing their
dirty deeds. No

2) They'll kill her and her daughter,
unfortunately will end up another
human trafficking statistic. Evil or Very Mad

I feel sorry for that poor girl. She is trying to handle something far larger and problematic than one person can handle.I admire her courage but this story just magnifies the ongoign sad state of affairs in that drug and corruption stricken country.

I hope that some men somewhere in Mexico have the courage to stand up and fight and defend their country and homeland and realize the obligation of such measures when it comes down to their young daughters having to stand up to the gangs and violence. No

If that was my daughter I would stand outside that police station armed to the tee everyday and defend her to my dying breath. Are people really that intimidated by the cartels?

I think it may be time for the U.S. to ask if Mexico wants military intervention because this is absolutely getting insane.

Inexperienced or not,she certainly commands and deserves respect...the respect of the people and the respect of the criminals.

Its not so much the act of her taking the police chief job but the concept that an unarmed girl is willing to stand up to an issue that many others wouldnt dare to.

She's gonna need alot of help to make it work though.

Her having a child does sort of heighten the risk that her or her family will be threatened.I hope that atleast the men of the town have enough manhood in them to atleast provide her with some form of protection and gaurd. Cool
