For us as Chicagoans this was both an odd and truly chilling event.

It was both unprescedented and more than a bit frightening. Not to mention the fact that had it not been for the tragedy ivolved with the event it would have almost seemed a bit intriguing.

It will be 5 years ago on Wednesday that Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 skidded off of the runway at our Midway airport while trying to land during a heavy snow storm and coming from Baltimore,Maryland. The plane came to rest in the middle of Brighton Avenue.Sadly once the momentum of the plane breached the airport's perimeter wall it came into collision with a car carrying a family of 5 that was visiting Chicago from neighboring Northest Indiana crushing it instantly. As a result a 6 year old boy was killed and his parents and younger siblings seriously hurt.

Today's news of the crash landing that killed 2 in Russia and Delta jet that skidded off the runway in Minneapolis brung back these awkward memories of this crazy story and somber anniversary.

I recall how bad that winter and storm was and I was working in Hodgkins at the main UPS processing hub about 10 miles away when it happened.I remember that day that it was still snowing when i got off my shift and went to jump in my car to go home so I got confused and wound up taking long roads all the way up to 79th street and saw plane awkwardly with its nose down sitting in the middle of the street like it was on a fueling run or something.

I cant LOL at this because a little kid died but if not for that it would be a little funny pondering what those people driving on Brighton were thinking and how many urinated and crapped on themselves when they saw a giant plane come past the security fence right infront of them.

RIP Joshua Woods

Yep Colt,I remember when that sheet happened too.I was like in 7th grade and that day me,mom's and Myla were were all going to go do some early Christmas shopping at Ford City but when we came back down 79th the road was blocked off at Connely on down and you could see po-po sirens through the foggy snow and then when we took a detour down the other side of the air port on Frontage we got closer on the other side of where the plane came out at and you could see the wing and part of the body.

Thats fucked up yo'

I know that no amount of money
could ever replace a son. But, wow!
I can only imagine how much that
family settled for in court?

Merry Christmas Josh! santa

an incident like that happened a few days ago in Russia but sadly two people lost their lives:

It went down in very snowy conditions. The next day Ukrainian airlines nearly had a similar incident.

What is remarkable is that more people didnt die.The tupolex was carryign 169 pasengers and crew.
