PostSubject: Dr.Jack Kevorkian"Dr.Death" dies at 83.   Wed Jun 08, 2011 10:52 am

Everyone for the most part has heard his name or atleast his nickname and everyone knows his story for th emost part.He is the Michigan licensed physician who advertised "death counseling" throughout the 1980's and 90's and later admitted to helping over 130 suicidal medical patients end their lives with lethal injections of chemicals and drugs.

He was charged multiple times with 2nd degree murder in multiples states though he was aquitted because most states had no laws against assisted suicide and Michigan stripped him of his medical license in 1991 although he continued to engage in what he termed as mercy proceedings between that time and 1998 when he released a video to CBS of himself administering a lethal injection to patient Thomas Youk who was in the final stages of Multiple Sclerosis and consented to wanting to end his life. After the video was broadcast on "60 Minutes" authorities in Michigan felt they had all the evidence they needed and tried him a 5th time on charges that he illegally administered a controlled substance as an unlicensed doctor and thus was in direct violation of Michigan law.In March of 1999 Kevorkian was sentenced to 25 years in Prison, though he only served 8 of those years and was released in 2007.Following his release he gave multiple lectures and interveiws on his perspectives regarding assisted suicide on college campuses and TV news networks. He pushed for federal laws legalizing assisted suicide famously saying "Death is not a crime".

Upon his death last Friday at the age of 83 it was surprising at how many people seemed to feel sorrow about his passing and veiwed him as a hero of freedom of choice, though there were others that scolded him even in death for hipocrisy and getting away with murder. As Ned McGrath, the Archdiocese of Detroit’s communications director stated: "It is both ironic and tragic that Kevorkian himself was afforded a dignified, natural death in a hospital, something he denied to those who came to him in desperation, only to be poisoned and have their bodies left in places such as vans and motel rooms".

No matter what anyone thought of Kevorkian he stoof firm by his beliefs that doctors should not only assist to preserve life but to take it away as well upon request of the patient and that ultimately no matter what desire of the medical patient it was the physicians duty to fullfill it.His mark and legacy is the ongoing controversy about wheather or not assisted suicide is right or wrong.Since his conviction and release several countries including Czech Republic,Finland and Bulgaria have made assisted suicide legal and the state of Oregon has also legalized it(although they have faced a tough battle with the feds in court over the years).

Well I really dont know what I think about thi guy to be honest,he did what he did and its done, plus the people he let die are wanted death so RIP to all of them.

What he did was wrong and I believe in his heart of hearts he knows it was wrong both in the sight of man and God.Every doctor had to take the hippocratic oath to practice medicine in the interest of ONLY bettering and preserving life, plus nowhere in the bible does it permit one to help someone else end their life as it clearly indicates that suicide (like murder) itself is an abomination and sin.I sincerely hope he made his peace with god, nevertheless he has alot to answer for RIP.

A very interesting figure.I remember several years back reading an aritcle about him in GQ magazine. The author questioned what the difference was between assisted suicide and murder and where should boundaries be drawn.

I think they are drawn at the consent or refusal of the person. If someone chooses death over life then so be it.They dont value their existence here then let them go.Just like most other things that people do freely and flawfully it should be their choice.I personally dont think Doctors should participate in helping patients off themselves but there can be like specialized medical technicians trained to know how to put someone to sleep painlessly.I only say I dont think doctors should do this because they have to take the hipcratic oath to preserve life.

Kevorkian should have checked with the families of those people he euthanized those people.Perhaps they wanted to die yes,but maybe their family members wanted to say goodbye or try to convince them otherwise.

Whats wrong with helping to lay dying people to rest peacefully if thats what they want?

If Im suffering and going to die anyway garanteed,I'd rather go out on my own terms then writhe in pain until the last nail biting moment of drawed breath Neutral That just sucks.

I can't say I disagree, but there's a modern version to that Oath, so technically that's not entirely true.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

The right wing nut jobs probably had something to with this. They edited the oath to justify doctors like Kevorkian and others that participate in lethal injections, primarily within the justice system as well as those that perform abortions. Both practices are not of medicine and are a slap in the face to what it means to be a medical health professional and I work with many of them almost everyday so I feel I have a right to gripe about this matter.

Abortionists and and Euthanizers arent doctors their trained, legalized killers.

I dont care whether they are neutralizing a fetus or administering a poisonous injection into a deathrow inmate's arm.

Although, I don't care for Abortionist either, I'd still support a girl/womens right to opt for one, especially if she gets raped.

Once and for all relieving the pain and suffering of the terminally ill. What is wrong with this?He was doing them a favor as they were going to die anyway.

And I for one beleive that he was doing it for the right reasons.

RIP Jack.
